Torso Stabilisation

1 min read

Torso stabilisation is the use of the back and abdominals to provide protection for the spine during lifting, sport or any vigorous activity. This is achieved through a contraction of your transverse abdominals (deep muscles which run from the front of the body, straight across the sides and link to your pelvis and back), obliques and deep spinal muscles.

To contract these you need to:

  • Pull in your stomach as you exhale

  • As you feel your muscles contract, lock them into this position

  • Breathe normally

  • Hold the contraction throughout the exercise

This will give you excellent spinal support.
