Excuses, Excuses

Having been Personal Training since the mid 1990’s (I’m giving my age away now!) I must have heard every excuse under the sun as to why people don’t exercise. It is very easy to dismiss exercise but it is so very beneficial for your health, figure, self esteem and mood.
Here are a few of the excuses I’ve encountered and how to beat them.
I just don’t have the time.
Our lives are hectic but exercise is so good for your health. It really should be a priority. You needn’t fit in hours of training each day but can do little and often or make some healthier lifestyle choices by parking further from the supermarket, getting off the bus one stop early, taking the stairs instead of the escalator. You can even perform a few exercises whilst watching t.v. such as bouncing on a trampet or jogging on the spot.
I’m too young to bother just yet.
Exercising regularly really can slow down the ageing process so why wait? Bone building to prevent osteoporosis is important even in our teenage years. It’s also easier to prevent weight gain than to try and lose it later on. Even if you look slim, your heart may not be as fit as it could be.
I’m too old.
Exercise is great at any age. You just need to pick something appropriate to your age and ability. It can also be a great social occasion if you join a class. As we age it is very important to keep our muscles and bones strong, our joints mobile and keep working on our balance to prevent falls and injury. It really will keep you more independent in later life.
I’m just not sporty
Being fit doesn’t have to mean being sporty. You just need to find something you enjoy such as walking the dog or vigorous gardening. Why not run around with your kids or grandchildren at the park or in the garden? Why not try dancing lessons?
I’m too unfit and too over weight.
You don’t have to start off fit but doing some moderate physical activity on a regular basis really will improve your fitness levels. Set yourself small goals and increase it slowly and gradually. Exercise in the privacy of your own home and you don’t even have to worry about people looking at you!
I’m simply too tired.
Exercise gives us more energy. The more you do the more you find you have the energy to cope with the demands of your busy lifestyle. In winter get outside in the fresh air and blow away the cobwebs. It really will get your heart pumping and endorphins flowing, making you feel better and more energised.
Exercise at the time of day that suits your body clock. If you are a Lark do something first thing to set you up for the day or if you are more a night owl leave it until late in the day. It will relax you after and help you sleep better too.
I’m not in the best of health.
Exercise and physical activity really can help improve more illnesses and medical conditions from arthritis to diabetes, to heart disease and COPD (bronchitis and emphysema). Just check with your GP or specialist for advice on the best type of exercise for your condition or get yourself a Personal Trainer with the GP Referral qualification.
So, what are you waiting for???
