ZOOM CLASS TESTIMONIALS
6 months ago I was finding the steering in my car very heavy. Now after attending Suzina's strength classes via zoom, I don't notice it at all!
Lesley, Welwyn Garden City
I have been doing Suzina’s exercises for some time and can’t speak too highly of her. She is extremely practical and enthusiastic and encourages us all by explaining why each exercise is good for us. She really looks after us and has kept going on Zoom throughout the past 6 months. Her classes have definitely helped my mobility. Thank you.
Joy, Welwyn Garden City
I am finding the sessions to be very helpful in improving my mobility although I still have to do the exercises sitting down.Having them on line means that I do them regularly. It is also encouraging to know that other people are doing them at the same time. Thank you for all the effort that you obviously put into organising the routines.
Judith C, Welwyn Garden City
Suzina's zoom based classes are always fun, well planned and relevant. She engages well with the class, with enthusiasm and humour.
Ian A, Hertford
Epidemiological evidence suggests that being physically active can reduce the incidence of hip fractures by 50%. The effect could be due to improved balance, co-ordination, strength and bone mass density.
Classes’ to help improve balance, flexibility, strength, mobility and circulation.
Can also improve confidence and mental health.
A friendly, sociable environment.
Held in Welwyn Garden City, Hatfield, and Hertford, Hertfordshire.
I believe it is really important for older people to take charge of their own health and remain active, mobile and independent for as long as possible throughout the senior years. It's also been shown that doing these exercises helps with strength, flexibility & balance and can reduce falls in the older adult.
I am a fully qualified and insured personal trainer and I trained with Later Life Training to teach Level 4 Postural Stability classes, OTAGO balance and stability and YMCA chair based exercise classes for the older adult.
In January 2012 I was interviewed live on BBC 3 Counties Radio, Jonathon Vernon Smith show, talking about exercise for the older adult. You can listen to it here.
I am also available to teach classes in private care and residential homes.
Client Testimonials
The classes are friendly and interactive and therefore are an aid to mental health.
Suzina Blackman was recommended to me by the NHS Pulmonary therapy team. I joined the class physically in January 2020 but corona virus intervened. However earlier this summer Suzina opened up zoom classes, which I joined and take part in twice a week.
Suzina is a very good teacher, showing you exactly how to do each exercise in an unhurried manner and also explaining which muscles are being used and it’s purpose. These can be done either standing with the support of, say, a chair, table or worktop, or in a seated position. The exercises are for strength, stability and balance and work different parts of your body and she never insists that you do anything that hurts or is too hard for your particular affliction. She is helpful to the elderly and all members with varying forms of illness.
I would highly recommend her to anyone in the older age bracket who doesn’t want to be immobile but is lacking confidence to join a class because they are not sure they can do everything. Suzina is very understanding of all health difficulties and always tells you to only do what you are comfortable with.
Additionally, the classes are friendly and interactive and therefore are an aid to mental health.
Mrs F, Welwyn Garden City
I joined Suzina's group and I have never looked back.
I am 72 years old & was referred by my doctor to go to the falls clinic, as I had had many falls and one of them was very bad & I had to go to A&E . I was phoned by Hertfordshire Independent Living Service and was recommended to join a Strength and Balance class that could help me.
I was very apprehensive as I was frightened of moving too much. How wrong was I .
I joined Suzina's group and I have never looked back. She has helped me to get more confident in walking around, and her class has made me a stronger person.
Her lessons are for people who need these exercises to help with building up the muscles and exercises to gain more balance. I now realise how important exercise is for anyone and her classes are aimed at people needing this support. Suzina tells you all the muscles that the exercises are for, and you do them at your own speed, sitting or standing. Stretching is the main exercise that has helped me, as have all the other exercises. She is always conscious of peoples safety as they carry out the lessons.
She has a wonderful way of approaching these lessons and completely took away any apprehension I had.The class unfortunately had to close because of Covid 19, but Suzina notified everyone that she was going to do Zoom lessons on line, so I carried on from there.
I could not recommend her enough, and thank her for her help and hard work she puts into her classes.
Val Seaborne, Herts
I feel far more confident when walking outside now.
I have been attending Suzina’s OTAGO strength and balance classes initially at the Leisure Centre in Hatfield and also in Welwyn Garden City for nearly 2 years and latterly via zoom. I feel far more confident when walking outside now. My balance has improved markedly due to the exercise classes. Suzina is very knowledgeable, advising us of the muscles we are using when doing a particular exercise, along with the benefit of doing the exercise. My physical health has improved significantly thanks to Suzina.
Caroline T, Hatfield
Suzina’s classes are fun, achievable, safe and effective
I am part of a group aged 70 to 90+. We have been doing strength and balance classes with Suzina for 2 years and since lockdown, continued in her Zoom sessions.
We’ve all found great improvement in our muscle strength, flexibility, mobility, coordination and balance, giving us a new lease of life.
Suzina’s classes are fun, achievable, safe and effective and she is an excellent caring instructor.
Sheila Hand, Hertford
Every exercise is demonstrated and explained
I am 90 years of age and have been attending Suzina's classes for some time (both in halls and on Zoom) and have been very impressed by the way they are structured and led. They enable people of every age and ability to find a way to complete each one. Every exercise is demonstrated and explained, so you become aware of the part of your body that has to move and its benefit in relation to every day activities.
The classes have stopped my physical ability deteriorating any more and in some respects improved it. Some of this has been due to Suzina's ability to motivate people and relate to them.
Donald Bull, Welwyn Garden City
The exercises have strengthened my body so that I am now able to get up off the floor on my own without support.
A few months ago I found myself on the floor, unable to get up on my own. I crawled to the stairs to get myself up by ‘walking’ up the stairs. As I was so unfit I joined Suzina’s chair-based class at Christchurch Baptist Church.
The exercises have strengthened my body so that I am now able to get up off the floor on my own without support.
I can also reach further into top cupboards and hang clothes in my wardrobe without pain.
Suzina explains why we do these exercises and how they will help us to live a better and fitter life, and be able to do more things for ourselves without help. She also makes getting fit FUN.
We socialize after class over tea and biscuits and she mixes with us and gives free individual advice which is really appreciated by all. Thank you Suzina for all your kind help and expertise.
I can recommend joining a class if you want to improve your life and have FUN at the same time
Sue Cox, Welwyn Garden City
I'm walking properly without trying.
Since doing Suzina's balance and strength classes I have noticed an improvement in my overall wellbeing. About three weeks ago all aches disappeared and my posture became upright without any conscious effort on my part. The spin off was walking properly without trying, amazing!
Don, Welwyn Garden City
What a difference these classes have made to my life.
After just a few weeks at Suzina's chair based exercise classes, the pain in my shoulder, which kept me awake each night, has gone!
Three months after that, I can now walk up the stairs properly. I used to get embarrassed, if someone was behind me, that I would walk up one step at a time.
The friendships you make with the other participants is good for the heart!
What a difference these classes have made to my life.
Pat Kennedy, Welwyn Garden City
I feel very confident working with Suzina
I never imagined I’d enjoy an exercise class so much until I joined Suzina’s class. She’s a really experienced teacher which makes all the difference. I couldn’t recommend her highly enough. She’s really helping me keep fit and I think that doing these regular exercises is keeping me in good stead as I get older, so I can’t thank her enough. The classes are good fun and very reasonably priced. I feel very confident working with Suzina.
Lesley Smith, Welwyn Garden City
"Hurrah, NO FALLS"
"Hurrah, a year of NO FALLS, after having a fall each year 2015, 2016, 2017. Thanks to Suzina's exercise classes which have been so helpful in helping me not to fall over throughout 2018. While I only had a grazed knee each time things could have been a lot worse. At the age of 68, a fall could easily mean broken bones especially in my arms and legs and/or a fractured hip. This is not something I wish to happen, as this would lead to a deterioration in my health and well-being"
Helen Eames, Welwyn Garden City

I no longer need booster cushions to get out of a chair.
I started classes with Suzina 8 months ago. I had given up tennis and badminton due to a very bad back. I did not expect to enjoy classes of any sort ,however I like them so much I now do 3 a week. Just recently I realised I no longer need booster cushions to get out of a chair. This has surprised me and generally I feel my body benefits from the exercises which are mainly on a chair . Suzina is friendly and very well qualified, I feel lucky to have found her .
Ann Williams, Welwyn Garden City
My strength and balance have greatly improved
I enjoy my Simple Fitness U3A classes & now those on Zoom. Suzina gives clear instructions, demonstrations and explanations. My strength and balance have greatly improved since joining.
Anne Miles, Hertford
I am now able to walk quicker and longer and bend to pick up the mail.
After my stroke, I first joined the OTAGO balance class. At first I couldn’t do much more than walk short distances (very slowly) with my walking stick. Since the classes I am now able to walk quicker and longer, do squats, pick up the mail when it’s dropped through the letterbox. Occasionally I drop my walking stick but I am now able to pick it up myself also I can now bend down to stroke and feed the cat (which she is happy about). On top of everything the classes have given me such confidence and self belief. The classes are brilliantly put together, the background music is great and the group at Hatfield are so friendly, welcoming and encouraging.
Thanks Suzina you are a great trainer.
Sophia Forrest, Hatfield
I can now sit to stand unaided
8 months ago I joined Suzina's chair based exercise class and then her otago strength and balance class. Then I could not get up from a chair without using my arms, now I can sit to stand 10 times in a row with no use of my arms!
Pam, Welwyn Garden City
" We’re very fortunate to have a series of valuable and affordable exercise classes for elderly folk In Welwyn Garden City and Hatfield. I’ve been going to them, at Christchurch, Barleycroft Road, Welwyn Garden City for the past 10 years. By indulging in an hour’s gentle(ish!) exercise every Thursday morning I have found my muscles and joints to be rather less rusty than before. They are designed to keep your joints moving, your muscles supple and your tendons stretched ! If you so choose, you can do all the exercises seated on a chair and this is very useful if you have some anxiety about falling when exercising standing up.
The classes are much more than just an opportunity to exercise – they bring people together, and I believe that the social significance of these classes is as important as the need to keep moving.
I recommend this class to anyone of three score years and ten or over, who wants to maintain reasonable flexibility and mobility! What’s more it is a very pleasant social occasion!"
Dennis Lewis, Welwyn Garden City
With no sporting inclination, these classes are ideal for me.
I find Suzina's balance classes very helpful. They are just what I need at this time in my life. Having had vertigo I am always conscious of being able to prevent a recurrence. Also, I seem to have been born with no sporting inclination so these classes are ideal for me. Thank you so much.
Anon, Herts
Exercises benefit our everyday posture, balance and co-ordination.
I cannot speak for everyone, but I am sure that my sentiments are felt by all. The exercises benefit our everyday posture, balance and co-ordination. My confidence and well being in general, have improved as a result of participating in the OTAGO class and I hope that this note of thanks helps give you an incentive to carry on with the good work. Well done!
Thank you Peter H, Hatfield
Exercises helped me strengthen my muscles and improve my balance after having a hip replacement
I have been attending Suzina's OTAGO class at Hatfield for over a year, the exercises helped me strengthen my muscles and improve my balance after having a hip replacement. All the exercises are planned to encourage people to keep as mobile as they can. Suzina is very encouraging but doesn't make you do anything more than you are happy with. You can stand to do the exercises if you are able, if not she will tell you how you can achieve the same results while seated. It not only keeps you moving but the class is friendly and welcoming and a great place to stay fit while making friendships.
Elaine Sims, Welwyn Garden City
These classes are a great help
"I have never in my life done any exercise, and I knew it was about time I started. I have kidney failure and will spend the rest of my life in dialysis, so I don’t move about as I used to. I live in sheltered accommodation and the warden asked us a few weeks ago if we would be interested in doing chair-based exercises. I joined in and I am really happy that I did. Once a week I join and we all have a very good time exercising under the strict supervision of Suzina. She is a lovely person, a professional and a good friend. Her lessons help us all to use our muscles while Suzina explains why each exercise is performed and it’s benefits. It also makes us more positive. These classes are a great help!"
María Eugenia, Herts
Sensitive and aware of the classes needs
We have been attending Suzina's class for some time now. She is confident and easy to approach. She is sensitive and very aware of the classes needs so makes adjustments accordingly. She demonstrates well and gives good clear instructions for each exercise, in a safe and relaxed atmosphere.
Hilda Groom & Neil Groom (visually impaired)
I am much more confident when I am moving about
I am pleased to be a member of this class which I find very beneficial. My balance has improved and I am much more confident when I am moving about. Suzina is an excellent teacher and the class provides an important facility for those who are in need of help with movement, balance and strengthening of their muscles.
Denise Beynton, Welwyn Garden City
These classes have really helped me with my back & shoulder problems. Having a good instructor to teach gentle exercises is excellent. The classes are good fun as well as a good work out with gentle movements for all parts of the body. Suzina is very good instructor and certainly knows her profession. She is very helpful when you ask questions to help with your movements to get better at the exercise & improve movement.
Having people in the class who are seniors like myself, knowing that you are not competing with anyone, is a bonus. Everyone is there to enjoy a good work out.
Would certainly recommend the classes for people in middle age or with mobility, strength or flexibility problems.
Attending classes with a good group (there is a great atmosphere) & instructor, makes the class an enjoyable event each week.
Val Angliss, Welwyn Garden City
You do such an amazing job and truly go above and beyond that of just an exercise instructor! The class has really helped my muscles.

Welwyn and Hatfield Times 1 October 2008 - Letters to the Editor
Our flexible friend
"SIR - I write to extol the virtues of chair-based exercise classes.
Without giving away my exact age (but I do share an exact birth date with the WHT!) there comes a time when the bones start to ache and the joints creak.
But I have found at least a partial antidote to that ageing process - chair-based exercise classes!
They may not sound very exciting, in fact my first reaction was to say “that is for the old!”, but since I seem to have become an honorary member of that august club, I have come to regard these classes as very beneficial.
They improve mobility, strength and flexibility. I am even thinking of taking up white water rafting again!
My wife and I have been attending the exercise classes for over a year now and have come to regard these sessions as part of our social calendar, for not only do we enjoy the exercise, but also we have the opportunity regularly to meet with old friends and make new ones.
Our "torturer in chief" is Suzina Blackman who puts us through our paces with great patience and bonhomie; it is always a joy to spend that hour in her company.
Her number is 07930 302102.
The class is held in the Baptist Church, on the corner of Parkway and Barleycroft Road on Thursday mornings 10.15am to 11.15am and the class is followed by a wonderfully inexpensive, high-quality lunch in the dining room at the church.
Another class is also held at the Barndicott Hall, Moors Walk, on Mondays from 2.30pm to 3.30pm. The charges are only £2 for the one hour session at each venue.
Have to stop writing now - time to go on my London Marathon training run !"
Dr Dennis Lewis,
Welwyn Garden City.

Improved my balance, flexibility and strength
"I recently underwent neurosurgery, followed by 7 weeks in a rehab hospital. Suzina has been a great help to me with my continued rehab post hospitalisation. I had a series of one to one sessions at home with Suzina and we concentrated on improving balance, flexibility and strength. Suzina is a very capable, caring and motivating coach.
In addition Suzina’s chair based classes (twice a week) have helped, especially strengthening leg and stomach muscles so that as well as relying less on my stick when walking I am now able to get up from chairs unassisted. The classes have also been good fun!"

These classes meet our needs exactly
"We write in praise of Suzina’s chair-based exercise classes! As a couple aged 71 and 82 we wanted to combat our decline in flexibility and muscle strength. These classes meet our needs exactly with the added advantages of a friendly, welcoming atmosphere and a choice of attendance days each week. Above all we value Suzina’s cheery, chatty and tactful encouragement while admiring her wealth of knowledge and relevant qualifications. Each person can tailor the exercises to their own capabilities so no-one is ever embarrassed. We can warmly recommend her chair-based classes."
Pat and Alan Thomas, Hatfield.
"I thought I’d let you know that your exercises stood me in good stead during my recent stay in hospital. I’m sure I was discharged much earlier than I would have been thanks to your help."
Fiona, Hertford
I no longer use my walking stick!
''I am amazed how a year of going to Suzina's class has improved my leg strength and balance. So much so that I started the class using a walking stick and I no longer use it! The class is well organised, Suzina explains the benefit of each exercise which is very enlightening and helpful. She is very good at dealing with individuals as everyone has different problems which she caters for. The class is also a lot of fun and very sociable.''
Lillian Cox, Hatfield
I have seen a huge improvement in my weak ankles

It has made such a difference to my well-being
I consider myself extremely lucky that I found Suzina and her exercise classes. I joined 9 years ago and the benefits have been amazing. I find walking so much easier (I no longer shuffle but stride out with confidence). Also I now get out of a chair without a struggle. I have arthritis in my knee's, had a right knee replaced, which unfortunately, wasn't a complete success, leaving me in constant pain, from that time on I have found my balance is much to be desired. I was already attending Suzina's chair based exercise class, so when she started the OTAGO balance class I decided to give it a go, and believe me it has done wonders for me. I find the exercises very beneficial and would recommend them to anyone. So come on, give it a try you will never regret it, we are all waiting to welcome you to our exercise classes.
Suzina is a lovely person and very knowledgeable and ready to answer any questions you may have,
Suzina, I don't think you quite realise it yourself, you have made a big change in my life and with a lot of laughs along the way.''

The Theraband Thigh Strengthener - An exercise for you to try
The benefits of this exercise are many but it’s main advantage is that it can be done seated and so is ideal for anyone with balance issues. The level of resistance can be altered to make it progressive. It is a great exercise to strengthen the hips and thighs plus it helps improve walking and getting in and out of a chair or a car. It is a great exercise for rehabilitation after knee problems as it helps to stabilise it. It is great for all ages and levels of fitness and no expensive equipment required, just a theraband.
To perform this exercise sit on the front third of a sturdy chair such as a dining chair. Keep your back straight and chest lifted with a little tension in the abdominals (Do NOT lean backwards). Have your feet hip width apart. Keep one knee at a 90 degree bend, then place the middle of the theraband under the ball of the other foot. Place only the heel of that foot on the ground and pull your toes up slightly. Hold each end of the band in each hand. Pull your hands towards your hips to place resistance on the band (now keep your arms still). Press your heel forward like stepping on the accelerator in a car. Keep the knee ‘soft’ rather than locking it out. Keep the knee in line with the hip (and not higher than) if you suffer from hip problems. Slowly return to the starting position. If you need more resistance just place your hands lower down the band for added tension. Repeat on the other leg. As a progression straighten the leg and hold it off of the floor slightly. Perform the exercise slowly and with control. Never hold your breath.
Perform 3 sets of 8 to 10 repetitions, 3 times per week.
